Guelph Organic Conference show

This past January I was lucky enough to have my paintings shown at the Guelph Organic Conference dinner. These two are the biggest paintings I have done in a while. Both are acrylic on canvas with ink and 22K gold-leaf.

Fairy Tree #16 - New Directions

Well I have to say through the summer I have not done much artwork. The garden and work took up much of my time. The garden did okay and the animals taught me a lot. To find out about them go to my other blog www.allsortsacre.ca.

I did partake in an artists residence at Mountsberg Conservation Area this summer. I have done this in the past at Crawford Lake so being at a new place was interesting. I must confess that I do prefer Crawford Lake for inspiration. There was a show in October for the artists and I did sell a piece. Always a thrill! I must say a great thank you to Nancy Cuttle of FASM.

I also kind of participated in the FASM Studio tour. Due to surgery I could not be there so it was not all it could have been.

Now that the cool weather is here, the garden is to bed, and the daylight is retreating at 5pm I find there is much more time to pursue artwork. So I have added some new works to the gallery. To see how my current style is developing in variety of medium is fascinating. Not only am I doing pen and ink with goldleaf, but also needle felting, acrylic, and a number of other things. It is amazing to see the worked in this way and to be free of the conventions of realism. How fun it is.

On Thursday night I went to see Loreena McKennit. Now I don't go to see many concerts but I have always wanted to see her. Over the years I have a selection of music that I like to do artwork to. Loreena McKennitt is one of them, along with Mediaeval Babes, and Dead Can Dance. All three artist can put me into a trance like mood to do artwork.

While at the concert, held at Knox Church in Stratford, Ontario - Loreena's home town - I just had to do some drawing. So I thought I would put two of the drawings I did while listening to Loreena live.

Art at Mountsberg

I am very happy to report that I am going to be participating in the Conservation Halton "Through the Eyes of an Artist" programs again this year. In the past I have been at Crawford Lake, which I love dearly and would have happily gone back there again this year. But I am going to be at Mountsberg this year. This is exciting as Mountsberg has farm animals, raptors, and a garden. It is quite an amazing place. It is somewhere I remember vividly going to when I was in elementary school.We would visit the birds of prey and have a demonstration of the bird's ability. I was enthralled and always loved it. Of course they also had, and still have the play barn. I feel quite honoured to be going back there so many years later as a guest to see how it has changed and grown. It does seem as though this park in particular combines two of my favourite loves, farming and nature.

Shelburne Farm

Shelburne Farm is an educational non-profit farm in Vermont. I was lucky enough to be one of the participants at a new workshop they were piloting up here in Canada at Everdale Farms and Environmental Learning Centre. It was a throughly wonderful experience and I met many great and incredibly smart people. All walks of life were there; urban, rural, farmers, gardeners, non-profits and for profits. It ran for two days.

The workshop itself was about Agricultural Education. This is still fairly new to Canada. We adults, like the children we would be teaching, learned through games and experience. The facilitators, Susie and Erica were wonderful and completely engaging. I learned so much in a short time.

We were treated to some delicious local food by Red Seal Chef Cathy Hansen. She is owner of Bernway Farms (Ospringe) and Philosopher's Kitchen (Waterloo).Many faces were there that I recognized and some that I knew only through name, but was quite familiar with. It was an honour being in the company of such pioneering people. Karen from Everdale should be commended for organizing such a wonderful weekend!

These are the photos I took of the workshop, not all of them good. There are a lot so beware, it may take a long time to load them all and they are not necessarily in the right order.
