Castration sounds like a really tough thing to do and I'm impressed that you had the balls to do it! LOL I'll definitely bring my egg cartons for you when I come visit the farm!

Thanks Megan,
I have seen the Mike Rowe segment and it is pretty dismal and funny. He is right. There are even worse things. There is no real painless way to castrate it seems. We did a lot of research and did the best we could. If we didn't do this then he had to go to the abattoir. Keeping a ram lamb isn't really an option unless you want to breed him as they can become quite dangerous.

It was an awful thing to watch and I felt absolutely awful about it. We won't be doing it again. If we have more ram lambs they will not be staying. It isn't pretty but it just is it seems.

You have a very cool site! It looks great. If you have any extra egg cartons and want a place to find them a new home I would just love them!!

Hi there! It's Megan from the Word Camp conference. Your blog is great. I was wondering about using bands for castration. Did you see the TED lecture with Mike Rowe? He discusses learning how to castrate a lamb and in his experience, the bands don't work and are actually less humane . It's a really funny and interesting lecture, you might want to watch it: http://www.ted.com/talks/mike_rowe_celebrates_dirty_jobs.html
